Etiquette of Tipping (Le Pourboire): In France, tipping is not mandatory. Because of French labor laws, restaurant staff are paid a full living wage, and service is legally required to be included in the price.
The “Service Compris” Rule: You will often see “Service Compris” on menus. This means the tip is already built into the price. You do not need to add 15%–20% on top of the bill.
The “Gesture” Tip: While not required, it is common to leave a small “gesture” if the service was excellent. In a café, leaving the small change is perfectly normal. In a restaurant leave a few euros to acknowledge great service. But it is entirely optional.
French Café Culture: In France, and especially in Paris, the terrasse (the sidewalk cafe seating area) is not merely a place to consume coffee; it is a fundamental social institution. It is frequently referred to as a “theater” because the chairs are almost always oriented outward, facing the street, rather than toward the table.

✈️ Continue to Part 6 (Episodes 46 - 52)There is only one set of audio files for both the textbook and workbook/study guides. Each audio file is used for both. The textbook contains the “script” and reading that goes with the audio file. The Workbook (Manual de actividades) contains the actual blanks to be filled in while listening to the audio file.
The audio is specifically designed to “talk” you through both the textbook and workbook activities. For example, a narrator will say, “Lección uno. Comprensión. Ejercicio A…” and then provide the audio content used to respond to the workbook questions & activities.

The Q&A content needed attention. Originally (a long time ago) I included two different sets of questions from various sources. But the questions were redundant, some answers were wrong, and the number of questions was overwhelming. With a little AI help I went through every episode and combined the Q&A sets, grouped the questions, and checked the answers. It took three long, tedious days to complete. I hope you like the results.
